Problem Install Printer Canon Pixma iP1000 driver in Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04, 10.10

Hi...this time I've to write the tutorial in English. For those who have problem installing printer driver for Canon Pixma iP1000 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Kaola 32 bit, you can try following method. (Update: also works for latest Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 32 bit)

1. Download printer driver for Canon Pixma iP1000 for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Kaola either from my dropbox:
or from
or from

2. Double click "ip1000-driver for debian based systems.deb" Gdebi Pakage Installer to install the driver.

3. Connect and turn on your Canon iP1000 printer. System will automaticaly try to search and install the driver but it will not find it.

4. New Printer windows will open. Choose "Select printer from database" and select Canon.

5. Select printer driver Canon PIXMA iP1000 Ver.2.50 and proceed for installing.

6. After completed, you can try to print a test page.

7. If you have any printing problem and get this message "Print error ubuntu stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter", try below two method by copy and paste command in Terminal:
sudo chown root:root /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonbj
sudo chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend

That's it... enjoy printing in Ubuntu Karmic :-)

I tried to install this way on 64bit Ubuntu 9.10 and it doesn't work...

  2. sorry to hear that...I don't use 64bit
I use this method for my 32bit Ubuntu

Just to confirm. Installing on x64 system does not work but i386 works well. The 64-bit installation recognizes the printer and the job is reported to have been submitted but nothing comes out of the printer. So, I made a startup thumbdrive installation to boot my computer whenever I need printing on paper (rarely).

  20. It didn't worked for me... Maybe because I've tried to troubleshoot this in that way:

    And trashed my system...

By doing your steps, with your package I get this error:

    Unpacking ip1000-driver (from .../ip1000-driver for debian based systems.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /home/palmira/Parsiuntimai/ip1000-driver for debian based systems.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite '/usr/local/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/', which is also in package bjfilter-pixmaip1500 2.50-3
dpkg-deb (subprocess): data: internal gzip write error: Broken pipe
dpkg-deb (subprocess): failed in write on buffer copy for failed to write to pipe in copy: Broken pipe
dpkg-deb: error: subprocess returned error exit status 2
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    /home/palmira/Parsiuntimai/ip1000-driver for debian based systems.deb

Would anyone suggest me how to clean-up and try to re-install it again?

  21. Sorry i don't know about this. I need a printer for home use. Where i can get the best one for Plastic cards printing purpose?
